Placemaking Week is designed to take place on the streets of Nairobi. Much of 2016’s activities were restricted to downtown Nairobi. For this reason, this year’s events will be more evenly distributed around the city, including high-density, low income areas. Potential sites within the CBD include Muindi Mbingu Street, Kimathi Street and Luthuli Avenue.


One of the facilitators for creating the installation is Joan Otieno. Joan is a Nairobi based artist influenced by her environment and the beauty of African motherhood and ancient societies. She uses an array of materials including waste materials. Incorporating found objects into 2 Dimensional work, installation as well as run-way fashion that is functional garments made from waste materials. Joan is currently a resident at Hope Raisers Culture Center where she also holds art classes for girls.
